Jnana Yoga

By Swami Sevaratna
This is the branch of Yoga that resembles the most with the practice of ancient Greek philosophers. It is considered a difficult path, requiring tremendous will power and determination. The Jnana Yogi uses his/her mental powers to inquire into its own nature.

The central theme in Jnana Yoga is "Who Am I?" Of course, such a question is not easily answered. We human mortals are in deep darkness regarding our true nature. So, to make some type of start in exploring the possible answers to that question, the Jnana Yogi begins his/her quest by excluding one by one all the parts of his/her existence that he/she IS NOT.

The physical body is the first in this list. Although the majority of humans are identified with the physical body, all the spiritual systems agree that we are not the body. The body is a vehicle that has a beginning and an end. It is important to be kept in optimal condition (preferably through Hatha Yoga and a healthy diet) but sooner or later one has to arrive into the conclusion that he/she is not the body. Personally, I feel that this is not so difficult to achieve in comparison with the next element, which is the mind.

The mind is mysterious and also very tricky. The aspirant has to spend many hours of introspection just watching the mind in action, to be familiar with its ways. The very fact that you are able to watch the mind is a proof that you are not the mind. One of the best tools that Raja Yoga has to offer is the practice of Antar Mouna or Inner Silence. In the final stage of this practice the Yogi stops completely the mind patterns. This is a great achievement because the nature of the mind is to forcefully resist any attempt to control it.

We perceive the space inside and outside a glass as different, just as we see ourselves as separate from God. Jnana Yoga leads the devotee to experience his unity with God directly by breaking the glass, dissolving the veils of ignorance. Before practicing Jnana Yoga, the aspirant needs to have integrated the lessons of the other yogic paths.

Jnana Yoga is based on the philosophy of Vedanta. The beauty of Vedanta is that it transcends dry philosophy and mere intellectual concept. Vedanta is an actual life experience, a philosophy in practice.

Techniques of Jnana Yoga
  • Viveka. This means "discernment" or "discrimination" in English. This technique, associated especially with Shankara, involves a deliberate, continuous effort to understand that the real you -- the Self -- is something separate from the objects of which you are aware.
  • Neti-neti. This phrase means "not this, not this" in Sanskrit. You apply this formula mentally to all objects of awareness to destroy the false sense that they are you. When all the objects are banished, the real you -- the Self -- is what's left over.
  • Vicara. This word is usually translated as "self-inquiry," but it really means examination, reflection, or looking within. This technique, associated especially with Ramana Maharshi, involves a continuous, deliberate effort to become aware of the real you -- the Self.

The Eye of the Hurricane

by Swami Chidananda
In this creation, in this wondrous universe, variety is the law of nature, infinite variety. Countless names and forms, objects, go to make up this outside universe, exist for a brief moment and take their exit. We come, and after a brief sojourn, we depart. Viewed from this angle, what we call life is a slow and continuous process of death. It is a continuous movement towards the exit point.

The importance of viewing life precisely in this fashion is that it is this view and this understanding that can make us dynamic. When we understand that we have a precious opportunity, a golden chance, a great occasion, but it is not going to be forever, then it is that the spirit takes the challenge. It says: "While the going is good; I must attain to the highest goal, I must fulfill the mission of my life. No resting on my laurels, no room for idleness and laziness, no room for lolling back and waiting for manana - la manana." The la manana attitude comes when you do not understand that life is a wonderful gift of God, but given to you for a time and therefore to be utilized, to be put to the highest use and not to be neglected, not to be wasted away, not to be ignored.

Therefore, when you know that you have something and it is for a certain time, then you begin to sit up and do something about it. That is why Master Swami Sivananda always used to have this clarion call, "O man, the goal of life is God-realization. It is very difficult indeed to attain this glorious human status. Life is short, time is fleeting, all is perishable. Be up and doing, waste not a single minute, time is precious."

So, this call was a call for dynamism, a call for ever progressing  onward, upward towards the great goal for which God has endowed you with the wondrous gifts of human status-thinking, feeling Life is a great adventure, a pearl of surpassing price, a gift which nothing else can equal. When you have life, you have everything, even though you may have nothing. Life is the world, for it is the human individual that is the central factor, not things. Things do not make you important. You are important. You are the real value. And what you will, that you can bring about. Whatever you wish to become, if you try for that, you are bound to become that, because a golden key has been given you by the Divine and that golden key is the wonderful law that governs the universe, the Law of Karma.

10 Secrets to Raising Your Vibration

by David Wolfe

1. Plant Seeds. The most fertile soil in the world is found in the human mind. Seeds are karmic substances. They have a potential and a destiny. If you wish to reap a different destiny in any area of your life, you need to plant new different seeds today. As you think so shall you be.

2. Set Goals. If you are not working to achieve your own goals, you are working to achieve another's goals. Set goals which challenge your brain to think in new directions. Write down your goals with tremendous clarity and intensity. Goals backed by faith will get you there.

3. Have Faith. Faith is the ability to have trust in powers greater than yourself, to stride into the unknown with confidence, and to believe in your own abilities-no matter what. The stronger your faith and clarity, the quicker you will set yourself into the Divine time flow where one is always in the perfect place at the perfect time. Get out on a limb; you will discover that is where all the fruit is!

4. Guard Against the Negative. The opposite of faith is fear and doubt. Doubt stops the full expression of your life potential. Faith is the one power against which fear cannot stand. Be strong and fear not, for strength of deed and sincerity of character will prevail over all obstacles.

5.Trust Your Intuition. Your intuition is the greatest tool you were given to help you navigate through this world. Trust it and use it. Nature will guide you towards growing and achieving the greatest levels of happiness if you simply tune in, listen to, and act upon your intuition.

6. Eat Sun Foods. We are what we eat. Eating plant foods transfers the vital Sun energy directly to you, undiminished. Raw plant food is truly the most perfect food for human consumption. A purification of the diet supports self-healing and radical whole-body rejuvenation.

7. Breathe With Intention. For more vibrant and fresh energy, start breathing with greater awareness. By altering the intensity and frequency of your breath you can calm, cleanse, awaken and rejuvenate your mind and body. The more oxygen available to your cells, the more energy you have to accomplish your goals.

8. Move Your Body. Daily exercise and stretching are essential to excellent health. Moving your body circulates blood, moves lymph fluid, distributes nutrients, cleanses cells and strengthens your body's systems and structures. A physiology of vibrant health leads to an enhanced mental, emotional and spiritual states. Practice yoga, martial arts, dance, sports, or anything that keeps you moving!

9. Do What You Love. You are endowed with a unique gift. Turn what you have in your heart into something others can enjoy and you may use your rewards to live an abundant life spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially. Remember that wherever your heart is, there too you will find your treasures.

10. Smile. The most attractive thing you can do is smile. Like the Sun, a smile brightens the entire day. Smiles are not just seen they are felt and have a profound and immediate effect. The vibration emitted by a smile is warm, friendly, inviting and best of all it is contagious.

The power of your thoughts, a gentle endearing smile, a confident stride, and a knowingness of your place in this world are all vibrations that define who you are. By raising your own vibration, you alter the vibration of others and the world around you. A great transformation in a single individual can alter the destiny of the human race. Now is always the best time to rise above, to make a difference, to profoundly change the world by starting with a few shifts within yourself.

Concentration Part-1

By Sri Swami Sivananda
Dear All,
If you focus the rays of the sun through a lens, they can burn cotton or a piece of paper; but, the scattered rays cannot do this act. If you want to talk to a man at a distance, you make a funnel of your hand and speak. The sound-waves are collected at one point and then directed towards the man. He can hear your speech very clearly. The water is converted into steam and the steam is concentrated at a point. The railway engine moves. All these are instances of concentrated waves. Even so, if you collect the dissipated rays of the mind and focus them at a point, you will have wonderful concentration. The concentrated mind will serve as a potent searchlight to find out the treasures of the soul and attain the supreme wealth of the Self, eternal bliss, immortality and perennial joy.

Real Raja Yoga starts from concentration. Concentration merges in meditation. Concentration is a portion of meditation. Meditation follows concentration. Samadhi (super conscious state) follows mediation. The Jivanmukti (liberated being) state follows the attainment of Nirvikalpa Samadhi which is free from all thoughts of duality. Jivanmukti leads to emancipation from the wheel of birth and death. Therefore, concentration is the first and foremost thing a Spiritual aspirant should acquire in the spiritual path.

You are born to concentrate the mind on God after collecting the mental rays that are dissipated on various objects. That is your important duty. You forget the duty on account of infatuation (Moha) for family, children, money, power, position, respect, name and fame.

Concentration of the mind on God after purification can give you real happiness and knowledge. You are born for this purpose only. You are carried away to external objects through attachment and infatuated love.

What Is Concentration?

Once a Sanskrit scholar approached Kabir and asked him, “O Kabir, what are you doing now?". Kabir replied, "O Pundit, I am detaching the mind from worldly objects and attaching it to the lotus-feet of the Lord". This is concentration.

Concentration or Dharana is centering the mind on one single thought. Vedantins try to fix the mind on the Atman. This is their Concentration (Dharana). Hatha Yogins and Raja Yogins concentrate their mind on the six Chakras (energy centres). Devotees (Bhaktas) concentrate on their tutelary deity. Concentration is a great necessity for all aspirants.

During concentration, the various rays of the mind are collected and focused on the object of concentration. There will be no tossing of the mind. One idea occupies the mind. The whole energy of the mind is concentrated on that one idea. The senses become still. They do not function. When there is deep concentration, there is no consciousness of the body and surroundings.

When you study a book with profound interest, you do not hear if a man shouts and calls you by your name. You do not see a person when he stands in front of you. You do not smell the sweet fragrance of flowers that are placed on the table by your side. This is concentration or one-pointedness of mind. The mind is fixed firmly on one thing. You must have such a deep concentration when you think of God or the Atman.

Everybody possesses some ability to concentrate. Everybody does concentrate to a certain extent when he reads a book, when he writes a letter, when he plays tennis, and in fact, when he does any kind of work. But, for spiritual purposes, concentration should be developed to an infinite degree.

There is great concentration when you play cards or chess, but the mind is not filled with pure and divine thoughts. The mental contents are of an undesirable nature. You can hardly experience the divine thrill, ecstasy, and elevation when the mind is filled with impure thoughts. Every object has its own mental associations. You will have to fill up the mind with sublime, spiritual thoughts. Then only the mind will be expurgated of all worldly thoughts.

The picture of Lord Jesus or Buddha or Lord Krishna is associated with sublime, soul-stirring ideas; chess and cards are associated with ideas of gambling, cheating and so forth.

Yogi sans food gives medical fraternity food for thought

By Priya Adhyaru Majithia, Ahmedabad, Agency: DNA
The realms of faith and spirituality begin where science ends - at least that's what they say. However, today's medical experts want to turn this cliché upside down, it seems.

A team of 30 experts are to conduct a series of rigorous medical tests at Sterling Hospital to unearth the truth about the biological trans-formation that Prahlad Jani, a yogi claiming to have survived without food and water for the last 70 years, has undergone due to a spiritual experience.

Jani, who had been put under a similar 10-day medical 'trial' in 2003, has willingly accepted to co-operate again, for a 15-day analysis. A series of physical study tests, MRIs, EEG, ECG, aura study, blood studies and neuro-physiological studies will be conducted during these analyses. Dr. Sudhir Shah, an eminent neurologist, scientists from Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS) and physician and diabetologist Dr. Urman Dhruv, are conducting this observational study in collaboration with Sristi and government of Gujarat.

Dr. Shah, who heads the team of 25 doctors from Sterling Hospital, said, "In 2003, we had authenticated Jani's claims and had also observed that his biological parameters mysteriously remained normal. This time, we have planned to go beyond a mere rectification. A detailed research which includes a strict protocol of various tests is to be conducted within 15 days to understand if there is a specific biological transformation that has occurred within Jani's system due to prolonged fasting."

According to Shah, for the past 108 hours Jani has neither passed urine nor stool, nor has he consumed water or food. "And still, at the age of 83, he is active enough to use the staircase," added Shah, who said that this itself is a unique phenomenon which does not have any medical explanation.

Dr G Ilavazahagan, director, DIPAS, said, "The exercise of taking this yogi under a medical scanner is to understand which energy supports his existence, if not food or water. And if at the end of three months by which we plan to come out with observations based on this 15-day check up, we are able to reach to an explanation of this hypothesis - it would tremendously benefit mankind. The observations derived from this case study can help many soldiers, victims of calamities and astronauts - who often have to survive without food or water for long spells."

The analysis of Jani's biological transformation can bridge the divide between science, biology and spirituality, say experts. Dr. Urman Dhruv, a physician, said, "We are collecting data on a person who has lived on an alternative pathway compared to an ordinary person. The comparative study of his reports of the tests conducted in 2003 and results of the recent and on-going tests would throw light on the process of aging in Jani's body - which seems to have undergone some type of genetic transformation."

'Starving Yogi' Astounds Indian scientists

by Rajesh Joshi, May 10, 2010
Indian holy man Prahlad Jani speaks at a press conference at a hospital in Ahmedabad on 6ht of May 2010. Jani, who says he has spent 70 years without food or water, has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television. During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

"We still do not know how he survives," neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is."

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the state defense and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings, set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

“Jani's only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period,” G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a statement.

Jani has since returned to his village near Ambaji in northern Gujarat where he will resume his routine of yoga and meditation. He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age, which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation, which ended on Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani's organs, brain, and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and memory capacity.

"The reports were all in the pre-determined safety range through the observation period," Shah told reporters at a press conference last week.

Other results from DNA analysis, molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

"If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one. As medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories." said Shah.

Yoga, the Path from Mortality to Immortality

Taken from Swami Sivananda's book "Practical Lesson In Yoga"
There is no such thing as inanimate matter. There is life in every thing. Life is involved in a piece of stone. Matter is vibrant with life. This has been conclusively proved by modern science.

Smile with the flowers and the green grass. Play with the butterflies and the cobras. Shake hands with the shrubs, ferns and twigs. Talk to the rainbow, wind, stars and sun. Converse with the running brooks and the turbulent waves of the sea. Keep company with your walking stick and enjoy its sweet company.

Develop friendship with all your neighbours, dogs, cats, cows, human beings, trees, in fact, with all nature’s creation. Then you will have a wide, perfect, rich, full life. Then you will realise God. Then you will achieve success in Yoga. This state can hardly be described in finite words. It should be felt and experienced by you by unfolding the divinity within.

This remarkable unfolding from the stone to the God goes on through millions of years, through aeons of time. But in the individual this unfolding takes place more rapidly and quickly with all the force of its past behind it. These forces that manifest and unveil themselves in evolution are cumulative in their power. Embodied in the stone, in the mineral world, they grow and put out a little more strength, and in the mineral world accomplish their unfolding. Then they become too strong for the mineral and press on into the vegetable world. There they unfold more and more of their divinity, until they become too mighty for the vegetable, and become animal. Expanding within and gaining experiences from the animal, they again overflow the limits of the animal and appear as the human. In the human being they still grow and accumulate with ever-increasing force, and exert greater pressure against the barrier, and then out of the human, they press into the superhuman. This last process of evolution is called Yoga. Therefore, when Yoga has definitely begun, is not something new, as is often imagined.

If you begin to view Yoga in this light, then this Yoga which looked so foreign and so strange, will appear to wear a familiar face, and come to you in a garb not altogether strange. It will not look so strange that from the man you should pass on to superman, from mortality to immortality, and enter a region where divinity becomes more manifest.

When you begin to learn that there is one Self in all these names and forms, that He is the same in a king or a peasant, in a bird or a beast, in a man or a woman, in a stone or a piece of wood, that all powers seen throughout the world are latent in “inorganic” substances also, that this Self is the same at all times, and that there is no increase or diminution in the Self, then Yoga will become possible of achievement.

In fact you have practised Yoga, consciously or unconsciously, in your previous births, and this is a vital point that should not be lost sight of. All that you have now to do is to give a powerful momentum to quicken the process of unfolding the divinity and attain the Highest Goal of Life - Perfection, Peace, Joy, Immortality and Happiness.

The Universal Prayer

by Swami Sivananda
Thou art, O Lord! the Creator of this universe. Thou art the Protector of this world. Thou art in the grass and the rose. Thou art in the sun and the stars. Salutations unto Thee, O Destroyer of the cycle of births and deaths! Salutations unto Thee, O Bestower of Bliss and immortality!

O sweet Lord! May I be free from the bonds of Death. May I never again forget my immortal nature. May I be able to look upon all with equal vision. May I attain the Supreme Seat of Brahman. May I be free from impurity and sin. May I know my real essential nature.

Adorations to the Supreme Being who dwells in the hearts of all beings, who is in the fire and water who is in the plants, herbs and trees, who is in the stones, bricks and iron-bars and who has pervaded the whole universe.

I bow to Thee, O Secret of secrets! I bow to Thee, O Indweller of our hearts! I bow to Thee, O Silent Witness of all activities of all minds! I bow to Thee, O Inner Ruler of all beings! I bow to Thee, O Thread-Soul who connects all beings, who pervades and permeates and inter-penetrates all things of this universe!

Salutations to Thee, the Supreme Lord. Thou art without beginning and end. Thou art the flower; Thou art the bee; Thou art woman; Thou art man; Thou art the sea; Thou art the waves; Thou art the old man tottering with a stick; Thou art the saint; and Thou art the rogue.

Thou art Light Divine. Thou art Light of Knowledge. Thou art the Dispeller of darkness. Thou art the Supreme Guru. Thou art beyond the reach of mind and speech. Thou art beyond any kind of limitation. Thou art the Oversoul. Thou art the Self of this universe.

Thou art Self-luminous. Thou art without parts, without actions, without limbs, without any taint of fault, without birth and death. Thou art our Father, Mother, Brother, Friend, Guru, Relative and sole Refuge. Thou art the embodiment of Peace, Bliss, Knowledge, Power, Strength and Beauty.

O All-merciful Lord! Through Thy Grace, may I realise Truth. May I always entertain sublime thoughts. May I realise myself as the Light Divine. May I behold the one sweet immortal Self in all beings. May I realise Brahman with pure understanding.

May that Light of lights ever guide me.May He cleanse my mind of all impurities. May He inspire me. May He bestow on me Power, Courage and Strength. May He remove the veil in the mind. May He remove all obstacles in the Spiritual Path. May He make my life happy and fruitful. I bow to Thee O Lord of lords, O God of gods, O Deva of devas, O Brahman of the Upanishads, the Support for Maya and Isvara, the Supreme Bridge to Immortality!

Om Peace! Peace! Peace!
